In celebration of Supergirl’s 66th anniversary, DC Studios co-chief James Gunn shared an exciting behind-the-scenes image from the upcoming film “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.” The photo, posted on March 31, 2025, features Milly Alcock, best known for her role in “House of the Dragon,” immersed in the pages of the comic series that inspired the movie.

“Nothing like seeing an actor dive into the source material,” Gunn said. The image shows Alcock focused as she reads “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” by Tom King, Bilquis Evely, and Mat Lopes. The acclaimed comic miniseries, which redefined Supergirl for modern audiences, follows Kara Zor-El on a cosmic journey of revenge, justice, and self-discovery.

Gunn’s post has stirred excitement among fans eager to see Alcock bring a more complex, layered portrayal of Kara Zor-El to the big screen. The casting of Alcock, praised for her performance as Rhaenyra Targaryen in “House of the Dragon,” has been met with enthusiasm since the announcement.

The upcoming film, directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, is set to showcase a grittier version of Supergirl. Unlike her cousin Superman, who grew up on Earth, this version of Kara Zor-El endured the trauma of witnessing Krypton’s destruction and drifting through space.

Jason Momoa, known for his portrayal of Aquaman in the DC Universe, has also joined the cast as the notorious bounty hunter Lobo. Momoa has expressed enthusiasm for the role, saying, “I was born to do it.”

Fans can expect a fresh take on Supergirl, one that delves deeper into her struggles and resilience. “It’s an opportunity to show a side of Supergirl we haven’t seen before—tough, scarred, and driven,” said Gunn in a recent interview.

“Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” is slated for a theatrical release on June 26, 2026. As anticipation builds, fans are eager to see how Alcock embodies the Girl of Steel in a journey unlike any other.

Supergirl was created for DC Comics by writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino. The character first appeared in Action Comics no. 252 (Cover dated May 1959), published on March 31, 1959.
