Marvel Studios has revealed the cast for its forthcoming film, “Avengers: Doomsday,” which has started production, during an extended livestream event. This announcement is garnering considerable attention from both fans and critics as the studio continues to expand its Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Returning to the franchise are several prominent characters, including Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Anthony Mackie as Captain America. Sebastian Stan will reprise his role as the Winter Soldier, accompanied by Letitia Wright as Shuri and Paul Rudd as Ant-Man. Additionally, Tom Hiddleston will again take on the role of Loki, known for his blend of charm and mischief.
A significant highlight of this announcement is the inclusion of new characters and notable crossovers. Robert Downey Jr., who is synonymous with Iron Man, will make a return to the MCU in a new capacity as Doctor Doom.
“This character is both a challenge and an opportunity,” said Downey. “It’s a new mask, but the stakes are just as high.”
Downey’s involvement has generated widespread speculation regarding Doctor Doom’s role in the overarching MCU storyline.
The film will also integrate characters from the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises, marking a pivotal moment in merging these narratives within the MCU. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are confirmed to reprise their roles as Professor X and Magneto, respectively. Furthermore, Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby are set to join the cast as Mr. Fantastic and Sue Storm from the Fantastic Four. The ensemble will also include Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, and Tenoch Huerta as Namor.
The direction of the film will be handled by Joe and Anthony Russo, who are renowned for their work on “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Endgame.” The Russo brothers described “Avengers: Doomsday” as “a massive undertaking that pushes the MCU into uncharted territory,” highlighting their goal to balance character development with the expansive scope that fans expect from Avengers films.
At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, the Russos revealed that Downey — who starred in 10 films as Tony Stark/Iron Man — will return in a new role, this time as Victor von Doom.
“Being able to create stories and explore characters within the Marvel Universe fulfilled a lifelong dream of ours, and we discovered a powerful connection with audiences in each film that we made,” the Russos said in a statement last year. “We’re thrilled to collaborate once again with [Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito], and the entire Marvel team to bring this epic adventure in storytelling to new and surprising places for both the fans and ourselves.”
“Avengers: Doomsday” is slated for release on May 1, 2026, and is expected to serve as a direct precursor to “Avengers: Secret Wars,” which is scheduled for release on May 7, 2027. Anticipation is high among Marvel fans, who are keen to learn how this diverse cast and storyline will shape the future of the MCU.
