James Gunn’s highly anticipated Superman movie, scheduled for release on July 11, 2025, has begun to generate buzz following early test screenings. With a runtime of approximately 140 minutes (2 hours and 20 minutes), the film is described as a modern yet faithful adaptation of the beloved superhero.

Insider reports from Jeff Sneider indicate that the test screenings have garnered predominantly positive reactions. One attendee commented on David Corenswet’s performance as Superman, highlighting that “the humor works much better within the flow of the edit.” The film is said to achieve a balance between humor and drama, reminiscent of Gunn’s work in “The Suicide Squad.” Another source pointed out, “It has genuinely funny moments but also knows when to drop the shtick and get serious.”

The narrative reportedly delves into Superman’s internal struggle as he seeks to harmonize his Kryptonian legacy with his upbringing in Smallville, Kansas. Gunn has articulated that the character represents “truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

The film features a noteworthy cast, including Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern. Early impressions have highlighted strong performances, particularly praising Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman and Hoult’s interpretation of Lex Luthor.

In terms of tone, the movie has drawn comparisons to both the first “Wonder Woman” and “Guardians of the Galaxy,” effectively blending emotional depth with moments of levity. The film is also noted for its superior CGI and the introduction of surprise villains, which have emerged as key highlights.

As the inaugural release in Gunn’s DC Universe, “Superman” carries significant expectations, with some insiders suggesting Warner Bros.’s future could be riding on the superhero movie. Both fans and critics are keenly interested in how this new depiction of Superman will influence the trajectory of DC’s cinematic universe moving forward.

“Superman,” the first feature film from DC Studios, will be released this summer by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Directed by James Gunn, the film offers a new take on the iconic superhero, blending action, humor, and heart, featuring a Superman who believes in the goodness of people. Produced by Peter Safran and Gunn, the film is based on characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

David Corenswet plays Superman/Clark Kent, while Rachel Brosnahan stars as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult portrays Lex Luthor. The cast also includes Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and Neva Howell. Executive producers are Nikolas Korda, Chantal Nong Vo, and Lars Winther.

Gunn collaborates with a team that includes cinematographer Henry Braham, production designer Beth Mickle, costume designer Judianna Makovsky, composer John Murphy, and editors Craig Alpert, Jason Ballantine, and William Hoy.

“Superman” will be in theaters and IMAX nationwide on July 11, 2025.
