Zelenskyy & Europe react to US-Russia talks, Trump’s statements

The Ukraine-Russia conflict seems to have escalated after President Trump referred to Ukrainian President Zelenskyy as a "dictator" following U.S.-Russia talks in Riyadh that excluded Ukraine. Zelenskyy condemned Trump's remarks and stressed the importance of Ukraine's involvement in any decisions that affect the country. Trump's comments alarmed European leaders, impacting international relations and contributing to market volatility.

The geopolitical landscape surrounding the Ukraine-Russia conflict has become increasingly tense, with recent statements from U.S. President Donald Trump adding fuel to the fire, straining relations between the U.S. and Ukraine, and raised eyebrows across Europe.

In a significant diplomatic development, high-level delegations from the United States and Russia met in Riyadh on Tuesday to discuss ways to end the ongoing war in Ukraine. The talks, which did not include Ukrainian officials, focused on security guarantees and territorial issues. At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides agreed to appoint special representatives to continue the negotiations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was not invited to the talks, strongly criticized the discussions, stating that any decisions regarding Ukraine’s future should involve Ukraine itself.

“Decisions on how to end the war in Ukraine cannot be made without Ukraine, nor can any conditions be imposed,” Zelenskyy told reporters during a visit to Turkey.

The US delegation, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and the Russian delegation, led by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, agreed to create a system for discussing issues and improving diplomatic relations. These talks mark a significant change in US-Russia relations, which have been tense since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.

In a scathing attack, Trump referred to President Zelenskyy as a “dictator without elections,” accusing him of prolonging the war and mismanaging U.S. aid.

“Think of it, a modestly successful comedian, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, talked the United States of America into spending $350 Billion Dollars to go into a War that couldn’t be won, that never had to start,” Trump said.

Zelenskyy, in turn, accused Trump of living in a “disinformation space” influenced by Russian propaganda.

“We are seeing a lot of disinformation and that is coming from Russia,” Zelenskyy stated. “Unfortunately, President Trump, with all due respect… is living in this disinformation space.”

Trump’s remarks have caused alarm among European leaders, who fear that his statements could undermine the unity and resolve needed to support Ukraine.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius condemned Trump’s comments, saying, “This is not acceptable. This is not the Europe, not the democracy where I live and where I conduct my election campaign right now.”

The ongoing conflict has strained international relations and has had significant economic repercussions. Safe-haven currencies, such as the U.S. dollar and yen, have strengthened amid market uncertainties caused by geopolitical tensions. While the U.S. and Russia have agreed to continue efforts to end the war, Ukraine remains cautious about any agreements that might be imposed without its consent.
