Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced he is resigning due to increasing pressure from his party. He will stay in office until the Liberal Party chooses a new leader.
He said that conflicts in the party showed he wasn’t the best choice for the next election.
“I don’t easily back down faced with a fight, especially a very important one for our party and the country. But I do this job because of the interests of Canadians and the well-being of democracy, something that I hold dear,” said Trudeau. “The Liberal Party of Canada is an important institution in the history of our great country and democracy. A new prime minister and leader of the Liberal Party will carry its values and ideals into that next election.”
Trudeau resigned after Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland left, criticizing his response to President-elect Donald Trump’s tariff threats on Canadian goods.
The Liberal Party has been in power as a minority since 2019, needing help from smaller parties to make laws. Recently, this support has collapsed, as the Bloc Quebecois and the New Democrats have withdrawn their backing.
Trudeau’s low popularity is a major problem for the Liberal Party, as polls indicate the Conservatives are ahead. The party now needs to find a new leader to help it through these challenging times and prepare for the federal election later this year.
