Krypto the Superdog will be making his first live action cinema appearance in James Gunn’s “Superman,” which is set to premiere in July 2025.
“Krypto arrives on screens in Superman this summer,” Gunn said on his socials. “Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman.”
Gunn continued to explain that Ozu came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs, stating that situation was “problematic to say the least.”
“He immediately came in and destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture – he even ate my laptop,” Gunn continued. “It took a long time before he would even let us touch him.”
Gunn said he remembered thinking at the time he adopted his dog, “Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?” That’s where Krypto came into the script and reportedly changed the story’s shape, according to Gunn, who wrote the screenplay for “Superman.”
Historically, in the comics, as Krypton is about to be destroyed, Superman’s father Jor-El creates a spaceship and sends a puppy named Krypto on a test flight. The pod gets lost in space, and Krypto is later found by an adult Kal-El (Superman) on Earth. The story is expected to be similar in the upcoming DC Studios reboot.
“What better time to debut the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than Adopt a Shelter Dog month,” expressed Gunn.
