According to a recent exclusive report by Variety, the highly anticipated Arkham Asylum TV series will no longer be moving forward at Max, the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service.
The project’s journey to the screen has been a winding one. Initially announced in July 2020 with a series commitment, the series was originally conceived as a spin-off of Matt Reeves’ “The Batman,” focusing on the inner workings of Gotham City’s police department. However, the series underwent a creative overhaul in November 2020 when writer and executive producer Terrence Winter departed due to creative differences. “Giri/Haji” creator Joe Barton was then brought in to write, but Warner Bros. ultimately decided to part ways with him as well.
In October 2022, Variety exclusively reported that Antonio Campos, known for his work on shows like “The Staircase” and “Christine,” had been tapped to serve as writer and showrunner for a revamped version of the series, with the setting shifting to the infamous Arkham Asylum. However, this iteration of the project has also been shelved according to a source with knowledge of the situation, who notes that a new project set within Arkham Asylum could still be developed in the future.
According to James Gunn’s recent update on Threads, the Arkham Asylum series underwent a significant shift before its shelving. Initially conceived as part of Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe, the show’s direction changed to integrate it into the broader DCU, with Matt Reeves still attached as a producer.
Right now Matt is producing Arkham as a DCU series, so there’s just the two for now.

This news comes amidst the ongoing expansion of James Gunn’s DC Universe (DCU), leading some fans to speculate about the potential impact on Matt Reeves’ standalone Batman universe, particularly given the recent delay of “The Batman 2” to October 2nd, 2026.
