Minneapolis shooting kills MPD officer, 2 civilians

Three people, including a Minneapolis police officer and the suspected gunman, are dead after a mass shooting that occurred in the city on Thursday. 

According to law enforcement, the shooting took place at an apartment building Thursday afternoon on Blaisdell Avenue near 22nd Street and left six people in total shot, including another police officer, a firefighter and another civilian. The three survivors are reportedly in stable condition.

Among those confirmed dead were Minneapolis police officer Jamal Mitchell, the suspected gunman, and a civilian. 

“There are not words to appropriately describe this tragedy. It’s the worst call a police chief can receive – one of your our killed in the line of duty,” Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said. “Like everyone, every police officer has a story; every officer has hopes and dreams. Sadly, Officer Jamal Mitchell’s hopes and dreams ended with his life on Thursday.”

Mayor Jacob Frey released a statement on the fallen officer.

“We will honor his sacrifice, we will remember his name, we will never forget what he did for the people of our city,” said Mayor Frey.

Officer Mitchell made headlines as a rookie officer in 2023 when he ran into a burning home to rescue an elderly couple. 

Officer Mitchell was responding Thursday to a 911 call of a shooting along Blaisdell Avenue when he was shot.

Per the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, When Mitchell got to the scene, he found people injured and got out of his car. As he was attempting to provide medical assistance to the victims, he was ambushed by the gunman.

The following information is preliminary and subject to change:

At approximately 5:15 p.m. on May 30, 2024, Minneapolis Police received a call of two people shot inside an apartment on the 2200 block of Blaisdell Ave. S. Officers from Minneapolis Police’s Fifth Precinct responded and the suspected shooter opened fire on the officers. Minneapolis Police officers exchanged fire with the suspect, and two officers and the suspect were injured during the gunfight. The suspected shooter died at the scene despite lifesaving efforts. One officer sustained an apparent non-life-threatening injury, and another received life-threatening injuries. Both officers were transported to Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC). One officer was treated and released. The second officer, identified as Officer Mitchell, died of his injuries at the hospital.

Officers searching the apartment building located two individuals, who may have been residents of the building, apparently injured by gunfire. One of these individuals, an adult, was found deceased in the apartment. The other individual, also an adult, was transported to HCMC with life-threatening injuries.  

Outside the apartment, another adult male was found shot while in his vehicle. He was transported to HCMC with life-threatening injuries. A Minneapolis firefighter also received a non-life-threatening injury during the incident. They were taken to the hospital where they were treated and released.  

Forensic scientists from the Minneapolis Police Forensic Division responded to process the scene and collect evidence, and homicide detectives responded to begin an investigation.

Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) investigators are working with MPD investigators to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting deaths.
