Central Alabama Pride celebrates its 46th annual Pride event in Birmingham, AL. beginning Saturday, June 1, 2024.
We sat down with Josh Coleman, Deputy Director of the Division of Social Justice and Racial Equity in Birmingham Alabama’s Mayor’s Office, to discuss the year’s festivities.

Daily Planet: What types of events will be available?
Josh Coleman: Central Alabama Pride will offer a diverse range of events, including our annual Pride Parade, live music performances, drag shows, family-friendly activities, bowling nights, and interfaith service. We also have a special Pride Fest featuring performances by iconic artists such as Adina Howard, Robin S., and from RuPaul’s Drag Race – Gottmik, Brita Filter, Mrs.Kasha Davis, and Angeria Paris VanMichaels.
DP: As this is the 46th year of Birmingham Pride, do you feel progress has been made for acceptance and inclusivity in southern states?

JC: Absolutely, significant progress has been made regarding acceptance and inclusivity in southern states. Over the years, we have seen increased support from local businesses, governmental bodies, and the wider community. However, there is still much work to be done, especially in combating anti-LGBTQ legislation. This year’s theme, “Pride Revolution,” reflects our commitment to standing up against such legislation and celebrating our strides in LGBTQ+ rights.
DP: How many people are expected to attend?
JC: We are expecting over 12,000 attendees at the parade and festival. The event continues to grow annually, drawing participants from Birmingham, all over Alabama, and beyond. It’s a testament to the community’s enthusiasm and the inclusive environment we strive to create. In 2023, the City of Birmingham reported a 3.6 million dollar economic impact due to Pride Weekend.
DP: How has this event changed over the years and grown?
JC: Central Alabama Pride has evolved tremendously since its inception. What started as a small gathering has grown into a week-long celebration attracting thousands of people. We’ve expanded our event lineup, increased community involvement, and amplified our outreach efforts. The support from local organizations, sponsors, and volunteers has been instrumental in this growth, allowing us to enhance the experience each year.
DP: What would you really like the community to know about this year’s Pride festival?

JC: We are thrilled to celebrate the 46th year of Central Alabama Pride. This year, more than ever, we aim to create a space where everyone feels welcomed, valued, and celebrated. Our hope for the 2024 event is to continue fostering a sense of unity and resilience within our community. We encourage everyone to support us by attending the events, volunteering, or simply spreading the word about our mission. Together, we can make this Pride a powerful statement of love and acceptance.
DP: You authored a book for children. What inspired you to write “Finding My Rainbow”?
JC: I was inspired by the real-life stories of young people grappling with their identity in small towns across America. My journey is a composite of courage, acceptance, and the universal search for belonging. It’s a tribute to anyone who has ever felt different and a reminder that there’s a place for everyone in this world.
DP: Josh’s character is incredibly relatable. Is he based on a real person?

JC: While the story is classified as fiction, Josh and his emotions, struggles, and triumphs are drawn from my real experiences. He embodies the spirit of many young individuals facing the challenge of coming out in less accepting environments. Josh represents the bravery it takes to live authentically.
DP: The setting of Cullman, Alabama, is quite specific. How did your personal connection to this place shape the narrative?
JC: My connection to Cullman is deep—it’s where I grew up and where I faced many of the challenges Josh encounters. The town, with its beauty and complexities, is almost another character in the story. It represents both the comfort of home and the fear of rejection. Using Cullman as the backdrop was my way of acknowledging that our environments play a significant role in our journeys to acceptance and pride.
DP: “Finding My Rainbow” addresses heavy themes with optimism. How did you balance this?
JC: It was important to convey hope and the possibility of acceptance, even in the face of adversity. By focusing on Josh’s growth, the support he finds, and the changes he inspires, the story celebrates the positive impact of love and courage over fear and prejudice.
