It’s official. The State of Minnesota has finally established a new state flag, and state seal, after a reeling few months.

The State Emblems Redesign Commission on Tuesday, Dec. 19, finalized a flag design for Minnesota after months of work that included sifting through more than 2,000 state resident submissions.

Minnesota adopted a new state flag and seal due to the older design being considered insensitive and offensive to many Native Americans. The old representation featured a farmer tilling land as a Native American rode off into the sunset.

More than 2,600 designs were submitted for the new Minnesota state flag and state seal during the public submission period that ended on Oct. 30, 2023.

Minnesota’s new flag includes an abstract shape that represents the district itself and an eight-point North Star and single light blue block to the other side.

On Dec. 12, 2023, the State Emblems Redesign Commission voted to adopt design modifications to the official Great Seal of the State of Minnesota, which features a loon, the state’s official bird, with other state symbols that represent the regions history and culture.
