President Biden announces new sanctions against Russia after its attack on Ukraine

At least 40 people have been killed after explosions were reported in multiple cities in Ukraine, according to an advisor of the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

US President Joe Biden condemned Russia for launching the military strike in Ukraine on Thursday, and announced a new set of sanctions and limitations on exports to Russia.

He added that the 27 EU members and G7 members will also participate in these sanctions. Russian forces have captured Chernobyl, per Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to the Ukrainian presidential office.

Four ballistic missiles were launched from Belarus into Ukraine, according to Ukraine’s military. UK PM Boris Johnson said a “massive” package of economic sanctions designed “to hobble the Russian economy” will be defined on Thursday “in concert with our allies.”

NATO’s secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, announced a virtual summit for Friday.
