Recently, Zack Snyder announced that he was restructuring his “Star Wars” story for an original IP on Netflix. The 55 year old filmmaker named the IP as “Rebel Moon,” which was co-written by Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad. The film now has an IMDB page as it nears production.

The synopsis currently states that,
“The people of a galaxy sends a young woman to seek out warriors from other planets to help them from the tyrannical armies that are terrorizing their peaceful colony.”

During the announcement, Snyder stated that this film was him growing as an Akira Kurosawa and a Star Wars fan. The synopsis shows how that relates with the story. It feels like Seven Samurai happening on an intergalactic level.

“This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a ‘Star Wars’ fan.”

Snyder for THR

If you’re a fan of Zack Snyder, you already know how much Seven Samurai and Star Wars has impacted his filmmaking career. If you don’t, Star Wars was the reason he decided to become a filmmaker in the first place and hence this story would be his passion coming full circle. Seven Samurai has also impacted his previous films such as Sucker Punch (2011) and Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021). It shall be interesting to see how the film maker incepts his 2nd original IP with Netflix following the successful entry in the Zombieverse with Army of the Dead (2021).

“It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.” (Snyder for THR)

Zack also mentioned that he spent the last 2-3 years building this universe. Rebel Moon shall be a new production entry under Snyder’s production company “The stone quarry” following “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” (2021), “Wonder woman 1984” (2020), “Army of the Dead” (2021), “Army of Thieves” (2021), “Twilight of the God” (TBD), “Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas” (TBD), Untitled Army of the dead sequel (TBD).

“I’ve spent the last two or three years building out this universe. Every corner has to be painted in. I’ve been doing designs, constantly drawing and really cultivating its fertile ground to make this world fully realized”

After all the recent project announcements, it’s safe to say that fans of Zack Snyder are happily feasting under Snyder’s two year exclusive first look deal with Netflix. As they say, Snyderverse is where Snyder is.
