A homebuyer’s guide: What to look for in your first house

2 mins read

When searching for a home, you may find it hard to discover the right one that’s perfect for you and your family. But there are many factors to consider that will affect your overall happiness with a new home.

So follow our homebuyer’s guide on what to look for in your first house. You’ll learn what areas to keep an eye on during your tours.

Home Exterior

Typically, when we arrive at the house we’re planning to tour, we look at the exterior aesthetically. However, we often miss the important areas that could potentially cause problems in the future.

Be sure to take a walk around the outside of the home. This way, you can examine anything that could be wrong with the exterior before making your decision. This includes looking at the foundation, siding, and even the doors and windows.

Layout

When you walk throughout the home, can you see yourself living there? Is it easy to get around? Does it have an open concept design? Be sure to imagine yourself already moved in and how easy or difficult it would be to get around.

For example, if you’re moving in with someone who has difficulty walking, you should consider the house’s layout and how comfortable they’d be getting around in it.

Additionally, think about whether the home is big enough to comfortably fit you and your family. Is there a bathroom in the master bedroom, or would you need to walk down the hall to use the bathroom? Ask yourself these questions when examining the layout of the home.

Outlets

It’s the little things that matter when choosing the right home. The number of outlets the house has and where they are could determine where you need to place your furniture. If you prefer a certain style and feel, you’ll want to look at the outlets’ locations.

For example, if you picture your TV and couch going in a specific spot, you may need to adjust and place them in different areas. Outlets are often-overlooked elements that people don’t think about until it’s too late. So keep an eye out for the details!

Garage

Whether you have one car or multiple, you’ll need to look at how much space you have for vehicles or even a workbench. How much space do you need? If the garage is separate from the home, you need to consider whether you’ll be okay with that arrangement.

The placement and layout of the garage could heavily impact how you live in the home, so be sure to consider the garage when choosing your house.

Yard Space

Do you like to entertain? If so, you may benefit from purchasing a home with a large backyard. Consider how you’ll use the space, especially if the home has a swimming pool.

Keep in mind that the bigger your yard is, the more work you’ll need to do to maintain landscaping, which means more money down the road. Furthermore, you’ll want to look at the distance between your yard and the road. If you have children, you may benefit from a house with an enclosed yard.

This homebuyer’s guide on what to look for in your first house can be helpful when shopping for your first home. Buying a home doesn’t have to be stressful as long as you know what to look for!
