According to political reporters, the pair spoke by phone for roughly 30 minutes on Friday. Trudeau expressed disappointment over the new president’s Keystone pipeline decision, and Biden pledged to work with Canada on the “Buy American” policy.

Speaking to the press ahead of the call on Friday afternoon, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau expressed his concerns over US President Joe Biden’s executive order to revoke the permit for the Keystone XL pipeline between Canada and the US — a decision expected to cause job losses north of the border.

In the 30-minute phone call the prime minister expressed disappointment over the new president’s Keystone pipeline decision and Biden pledged to work with Canada on the ‘Buy American’ policy.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stressed the common ground Canada and the United States share ahead of his first phone call with U.S. President Joe Biden later on Friday, adding that it was the start of a “new era” for the two countries.​

Canadians welcome the renewed relationship with the U.S. after years of insults and threats from the Trump administration.

“We have so much alignment,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said. “Not just me and President Biden, but Canadians and President Biden.”

President Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau “agreed to meet next month in order to advance the important work of renewing the deep and enduring friendship between Canada and the United States,” Trudeau’s office says in readout of Biden’s first call with a foreign counterpart.
